What I Learned This Semester

I learned many things this semester including the Rwandan Genocide. I learned that it was a giant catastrophe and many parties were involved. I think the MRND and the UN were mostly responsible because the MRND promoted violence and made Hutu’s feel like it was their responsibility to kill Tutsi’s and the UN did nothing to stop it. France and the United States also played a role because France trained soldiers and the U.S. didn’t really do anything to stop the conflict. This activity also gave me hands on experience with a debate. After hearing everyone yelling at the MRND and the UN in the classroom, I couldn’t even imagine what it would be like in a real heated debate with hundreds of people yelling.
I learned a lot from watching the movie Rabbit Proof Fence. I learned about how badly the Australian aborigines were treated by the government and I saw how a cultural genocide was taking place. It was hard to imagine how the families would have felt seeing their children being taken away to be taught a new life without any choice and seeing your culture slowly fading away. The weird part was that the government thought they were doing the aborigines a favor by changing their culture when they were really doing a terrible thing. The children were mistreated and had barely any rights and they had to get their names changed. I hoped that while watching this movie, something like this would never happen again and that governments take note of what happened to the aborigines when they have to deal with a native culture.
Another case of bad treatment against natives was the movie The Power of One. Unlike Rabbit Proof Fence, we had just started studying South Africa so I didn’t have much prior knowledge on what went on there. The movie showed the brutality and unfairness of apartheid and it made me angry that a government would make laws to discriminate against people just because of their skin color. PK helped teach the blacks how to read but the government would not let him because they were afraid of the blacks becoming intelligent. I understood that the government’s plan was to not educate the blacks so they wouldn’t fit into society which would prevent them from getting rid of apartheid. Overall it was a good movie and taught me a lot about South African apartheid.
Margin Notes taught me a whole new way to take notes this year. I use to just jot stuff down on a piece of paper when reading an article but now I just take the notes on the article and it helps me understand it better because I know exactly where the note is coming from. It was weird at first writing in the margins with lines going everywhere but after a few tries it became easy. I think taking notes this way is very efficient and will help me down the road.
Something I never really worked on until this year was a thesis in my papers. I learned that Mr. Fielder is really strict on them and he will not let you continue to write until it is great. The thesis tells the reader what your opinion is on the paper and what it will generally be about. It makes a lot of sense because most people don’t like reading something if they don’t know what it is about and with a really good thesis, you can capture the reader’s attention and make it really interesting for him/her. All in all I learned a lot this semester and I hope it is the same for the second semester.

Native Americans

I would want to live in the United States.
The Native Americans know the land in the United States way better than the British or any European country that wants to settle there. They can use this to their advantage by using guerrilla warfare and getting food and water. They are at a major disadvantage because they have no guns like the British but arrows and spears should do the job in guerrilla warfare. To beat the British, they would have to come together. Tecumseh and the Iroquois Confederation have grouped together tribes to have a better chance against the British and have won some battles.
South African natives know their land too and have joined together but the fact that gold and diamonds have been found means the British will pursue their land more and will not accept defeat. South Africa is also a great port for shipping and boating so the British would get gold, diamonds, shipping, and land opportunities from South Africa yet from the Native American territory, they only want to drive them out to spread settlement. The bottom line is gold, diamonds, and trading are more important than settlement so the British will be way more aggressive in taking South Africa than Indian Territory.

Free Blog- National Championship

The national championship was really bad this year. I was anticipating a really good game because both teams were evenly matched. Texas dominated in the beginning with turnovers but they kept kicking field goals instead of scoring touchdowns. When Colt McCoy got injured, it ruined the game. I felt really bad for him because it was his last game and he had waited 4 years to be in the national championship game. After he got hurt they put a freshman in and all they did was run the ball because Texas didn’t want to make a mistake. I could not understand why Texas decided to throw a shovel pass at the end of the half with only seconds remaining. The interception for a touchdown seemingly ruined any chance they had at coming back. In the second half Alabama played really safe to make sure they didn’t make any mistakes or turnovers. I think it almost cost them the game because Texas came back to be only down by three. I was amazed on how the Texas quarterback played in the 4th quarter. He threw two touchdowns and was hitting all of his receivers. If Texas wouldn’t have wasted the first half by playing conservative, maybe he would have gotten in sync earlier and they would have had a better chance to win. The whole game was really boring to watch until the 4th quarter when Texas mounted a huge comeback. It was really cool when Shipley scored a touchdown with about 6 minutes left and then Texas got the two point conversion to cut it to a 3 point lead. When Alabama got the ball back they were able to move it down the field which gave Texas bad field position. When Texas got the ball back with about 3 minutes left, I thought I was about to see and epic drive with the true freshman quarterback beating no.1 Alabama but he got sacked, fumbled, and Alabama recovered. Texas still had a chance with 2 timeouts left if they stopped Alabama from scoring a touchdown but on 3rd down the Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram scored a touchdown which sealed the victory. I think Alabama deserved to win the championship after beating Florida in the SEC Championship game but they did not play good in the National Championship and were really lucky McCoy got hurt. I hope next year’s game is way better than this one and that Michigan is in it.
